The objective of organising this event is to boost wool textile trade following the introduction of the ‘Free Trade Agreement’ (FTA) between India and Japan. There is urgent need to harness the potential opportunities for the mutual benefit of both countries following the introduction of the FTA which allows the importation of Indian garments into Japan at zero duty (previously 11%). Japan is a major and very important market from the Indian textile industry’s perspective; it imports large volumes of textile products from various countries.
The Indian wool industry is an important industry representing small, medium and large scale companies. For the apparel industry, wool is mainly imported from Australia for the manufacturing of fine suiting fabrics, knitwear, scarves, stoles etc. India is now the second largest importer of Australian Merino wool after China. The bulk of the wool that is produced in India is of ‘coarse’ quality and used mainly in the manufacture of hand-knitted carpets.
India is among the top five suppliers of garments to Japan. Mr. Mahesh N Sanil, Executive Director of WOOLTEXPRO India said, “Japan's import of textile and apparel from India is about US$560 million for the year 2010 and there is tremendous scope of improvement, which prompted us to organise this India Textile Show in Tokyo.”
He further adds, “We are very much thankful to the Indian Embassy and The Woolmark Company for providing us all the support to make this event successful.”
Mr. Amir Sheikh, Country Manager India of The Woolmark Company said, “We are keen to support such events to promote the Indian wool industry at global level.”
Mr. Tosh Inoue, Country Manager Japan of The Woolmark Company expresses his views, “This is a good initiative by WOOLTEXPRO in association with our Indian office to promote Indian wool textiles to our Japanese buyers and retailers. We have invited all our potential buyers to take advantage of this show and expand their business with Indian companies.”
Wool Industry Export Promotion Council (WOOLTEXPRO) is an autonomous, non-profit Export Promotion Council, sponsored by the Ministry of Textiles and set up by the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India, which has become the international face of Indian woollen textiles successfully facilitating exports.
